Beechwood Residence
This project was conceived as a thoughtful urban infill home rooted in both family connection and historic context. Built on a narrow lot with a steep grade, the design responds by organizing the home in a linear progression from the backyard to the street, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living. At its heart, the kitchen, dining, and family spaces are intentionally intertwined to support cooking, gathering, and everyday life, while a screened porch and strong connection to the back patio extend these moments outdoors.
The architecture emphasizes visual continuity and spatial efficiency, with carefully framed views from front to back and a tiered layout that follows the natural slope of the site. A central skylight introduces abundant natural light while maintaining privacy from nearby neighbors, and a balcony connects upper and lower levels to reinforce a sense of openness. Throughout the home, “rooms within rooms” create distinct yet connected zones, complemented by features such as a concealed television integrated into millwork, a shared study space between children’s bedrooms, and a variety of hidden storage solutions tucked into underutilized areas.
Material selections and interior details balance durability with character, reflecting the needs of a growing family alongside a refined aesthetic. Engineered flooring made from reclaimed wood brings warmth and resilience, while custom tile, expressive wallpaper, and vibrant fixtures introduce moments of color and personality against a neutral backdrop. The plaster exterior reinterprets traditional techniques with modern detailing, aligning with the clients’ appreciation for a more contemporary, even subtly brutalist sensibility, while still respecting the surrounding historic fabric.
