Bill’s Sandwich Palace
This project transformed a beloved sandwich pop-up into a permanent brick-and-mortar restaurant deeply rooted in its neighborhood’s character. Taking over the former beloved Sweet 16 space, the design focused on preserving the approachable, down-to-earth atmosphere that had made the pop-up special while modernizing the layout for accessibility and functionality. Major updates included a new counter system, POS integration, and ADA-compliant seating, ensuring the space felt open and inclusive for all guests.
Architecturally, the team worked carefully around existing structural features while adding flexible elements such as an adjustable menu board and integrated shelving for merchandise display. The interior features a distinctive drop bar, creating a sense of separation between the kitchen and dining area without losing the warmth of an open-line experience. New flooring and updated equipment gave the space a refreshed yet familiar feel. Outside, expanded sidewalks and picnic table seating help the restaurant engage more actively with the street, inviting passersby to linger.
More than just a restaurant, this project reinforces the establishment’s role as a true neighborhood hub. From community pop-ups and special holiday menus to local partnerships like donating proceeds to Friends of Shelby Park, the design supports an evolving and collaborative food destination.
