We had the unique opportunity to contribute to the master plan and design guidelines for the Echo development in Brentwood, Tennessee, where the Ragsdale Residence is located. The residence was an existing home that the developer recognized as an ideal model for establishing the community’s design standard. Conceived as a modern retreat in the woods, the home blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings while making a subtle, confident statement that sets the tone for the neighborhood. 

Working largely within the existing envelope, the design introduces more modern elements and high-quality materiality, including a double-height entry with floor-to-ceiling glass, bringing abundant natural light deep into the home. A reimagined entry sequence, anchored by a custom door and sculptural staircase, creates a sense of arrival and openness. 

Natural materials such as Tennessee field stone, natural oak, and blackened steel are carefully layered throughout the interior and exterior, softening the modern lines and creating warmth. A natural wood screen defines the entry and continues inside, adding texture while diffusing daylight. Large expanses of windows frame views of the pool, pond, and wooded landscape beyond, reinforcing the connection between indoor and outdoor living. Additional features include a spa-like primary suite with a sauna and outdoor shower, a separate guest entry leading directly to the pool and guest suite, and a generous outdoor kitchen with a screened porch. Custom elements, including a bespoke dining table and a traditionally inspired fireplace rendered in contemporary materials, further tailor the home to the clients’ lifestyle while bridging past and present.
