The Catbird Seat

After years of cultivating a strong brand identity and distinctive atmosphere in their previous location, Patterson House and Catbird Seat sought to honor their established legacy and refine their image for the future in a new space. Located in a new construction atop Nashville's historic Voorhees building, the project embraces adaptive reuse while activating and grounding a growing neighborhood.

The client envisioned two distinct yet interconnected spaces, unified by a familiar reception area and shared kitchen. From the reception, a long, darkened corridor unfolds to the right, creating a deliberate sensory transition. This passage draws guests away from the intimate, moody aesthetic of The Patterson House and gradually prepares them for the luminous, open atmosphere of The Catbird Seat. The journey heightens anticipation, moving from shadow and mystery into a bright, airy dining space that feels both transformative and inviting.

At the heart of the restaurant is a central bar concept that offers every guest a seat at the chef’s table, reinforcing intimacy and connection. Overhead, a backlit bird’s-eye maple installation introduces warmth and delicacy. Light wood tones like white oak, birch, and maple, are paired with Tennessee pink marble countertops and a variegated bar front that evokes a forest of trees. Wax-plastered walls, sheer curtains, and antique brass lighting contribute to a soft, inviting ambiance. A quiet, analogous color palette throughout allows the dishes themselves to provide vibrancy, ensuring the cuisine remains the focal point of the experience.

A separate wine bar and lounge area features green marble surfaces, tan leather seating, and light oak stools, offering a relaxed setting for drinks before dinner. Built-in wardrobes display the chef’s fermented creations, while large aggregate floor tiles reference rocky soil suited for growth, subtly tying materiality to culinary craft.

Patterson House and Catbird Seat put Nashville on the map as a culinary destination and continue to be beloved institutions that stand the test of time while elevating the city’s culinary community. By reestablishing these Nashville staples in a vibrant new location, the project strengthens the city’s cultural fabric and reinforces its reputation as a premier destination for food and hospitality.
